Once you acquire your green card, you need to fulfill a number of conditions in case you want to maintain it. First, you should not go against immigration laws or commit criminal offences. This includes the law of notifying the immigration department of your change of address within 10 days. You must also not abandon the United States.

Avoiding these Problems

You can increase the chances of maintaining your United States residency by applying for citizenship when you become eligible. The eligibility period is normally five years after getting the green card, however, there are a number of special cases. For instance, if you get an asylum, the period reduces to four years. The time is reduced to three years if  you were married during the time of getting the green card you are still married.
